SAFW AW16 | 5 standout menswear trends

African menswear took a tentative seat at the fashion table with the two South African Menswear Weeks held in Cape Town in February and July. In October, South Fashion Week (SAFW) AW16 dedicated the last day to menswear, featuring established and upcoming designers. Several trends emerged from the runway. We picked five.

  1. 50 shades of grey or is blue the warmest colour? You can never go wrong with Grey or Blue. Get ready to beat the cold in various shades of grey and blue next autumn/winter; layered together or worn separately.
  2. Feminine Silhouette: It is always beautiful to see womenswear and menswear blend so seamlessly to create an almost androgynous look. The blouse-like shirts and harem pants worn by Ephymol and Duke models added a feminine touch to the collections.
  3. Capes: Capes and ponchos might just be a common sight among stylish men who are more on the unconventional side.
  4. Sports Luxe: Sports luxe has been around for a few seasons and it seems like the trend is here to stay. Who does not want to look stylish and feel comfortable at the same time?
  5. Thobes: Longer length shirts otherwise known as thobes in Arabic were also a popular feature on the runway in different patterns and lengths.
