Abantu Book Festival – Mr Thando Mgqolozana’s defiant middle finger to the literary establishment, and love letter to black authors and readers – will in early December celebrate three years in existence with an ever-glittering and expanding list of festival speakers. The festival for black writers and readers is a hive of vigorous intellectual exchange, laughter and affection: between readers and creators, and among kin in the written and spoken word.
With a list, in excess of 45, that includes Advocate and Author Tembeka Ngcukaitobi; Poet and Children’s Book Author Lebogang Masango, Veteran Zimbabwean Author Tsitsi Dangarembga; Prof. Pumla Gqola; veteran storyteller Ms. Gcina Mhlophe; Nigerian book publisher Bibi Bakare-Yusuf; young author Mr Phumlani Pikoli and digital journalist and author Haji Mohammed Dawjee, Soweto is sure to once again be abuzz with an urgent and generous literary energy. The only tantalising mystery is how these colossal minds will be curated over four days. That will be answered in due course.
Abantu Book Festival, December 6 – 9.
Day events are free and start at 10am at Eyethu Lifestyle Centre, while the evening programme kicks off at 6pm, at the Soweto Theatre, R20 per event.
The programme will be announced soon.
